Close Calls No. 19 - Touch and.. Uh oh!
by Anthony Nalli
"Well, in my illustrious 270+ hours of recreational flying as a private pilot, I just yesterday had my closest near disaster" starts off this month's Close Calls pilot. He hadn't flown for a little while so thought he would "shoot a couple circuits before heading out for a local sight-seeing flight." The first circuit went without anything of note taking place. On our pilot's second touch-and-go… well that was another story. . . . continue

This month's Close Call comes to us from the west… the wild west as it turns out, well on that day anyway. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 15 - Heads Up
by Anthony Nalli
This month's Close Calls pilot has been flying for a while. He is IFR rated and has flown south to the Bahamas (from the Toronto, Canada area) and as far west as Los Angeles -- most of it under instrument flight rules. On average, he logs about 120 hours a year. At a local flying club he initiated the exercise of group quizzes on ATC rules and air regulations as a way to pass through those winter weekends when he and his colleagues were grounded by the weather. He also runs a number of ATC procedures workshops and cross border flyout courses for the club's newer members. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 13 - A Rapid Return
by Anthony Nalli
As an instrument rated pilot, our pilot always flew cross country IFR and this day was no exception. About three years ago, our pilot and his wife were returning in their Cessna 182 to their home base in the San Diego area from visiting their grandchildren in central California. Everything was routine until they landed at the airport. . . . continue

Close Calls No. 11 - The Bounds of Complacency
by Anthony Nalli
This month's Close Call comes from our Facebook group. Our pilot was working on their private pilot license doing her second solo in the circuit (traffic pattern). Just before going up that day our pilot's instructor advised her of another student in the circuit with his instructor practicing their touch and go's. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 10 - Flight Following: A Controller's Perspective
by Anthony Nalli
The reason for Close Calls and my personal mission to become a very public collision avoidance advocate was a fatal mid-air collision a little over a year ago that occurred near my home airport. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 9 - A Hill of Beans
by Anthony Nalli
Recently a pilot with thirty years of flight experience approached me at the Canadian Aviation Expo to discuss some of his close calls. He has permitted me to share one of his stories, one that he says "really got those nervous butterflies a twitchin'." . . . continue

Close Calls No. 7 - Descend 4000… NOW!
by Anthony Nalli
It was a very hot, hazy day in the middle of May. Our pilot and co-pilot were flying a VFR round robin from Toronto Buttonville to Ottawa and back to Buttonville cruising at 4500' on the return leg from Ottawa . . . continue
Close Calls No. 6 - Playing Cat and Mouse with a DC-9
by Anthony Nalli
This month's Close Call comes from yet another of my fellow Internet forum-goers and I share it with you as the poster had written it. "As a freshman flier back in 1980 with less than 80 hours in my log book I departed CYHU in a PA28-140 . . . continue
Close Calls No. 5 - An Ounce of Prevention
by Anthony Nalli
I recently attended an airspace seminar held jointly by Transport Canada and Nav Canada. Not surprisingly the seminar was excellently delivered, very informative, and very well attended with about 50 or 60 pilots participating. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 4 - Lady Luck in the Right Seat

Close Calls No. 3 - Traffic Alerts on Your Garmin GPS
by Anthony Nalli
Year in and year out the Garmin x96-series portable GPS has received top honors by aviation product reviewers. Garmin has proven that they are to GPS what Microsoft is to computer software -- the industry's 800-pound gorilla -- and with good reason. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 2 - The Pilot Maintains Responsibility…
by Anthony Nalli
This month's Close Call occurred in Alberta in August of 2006. Our pilot was a taking a friend on a short pleasure ride one beautiful summer Saturday morning. . . . continue
Close Calls No. 1 - Ignorance ISN'T Bliss
by Anthony Nalli
My first story is one of my own. It was a beautiful summer day. My brother and I were returning to Brampton from a day trip in Parry Sound after a round of golf. . . . continue
 TESTIMONIALS

Here's what fellow pilots are saying..

"I have been studying the workshops on this website and I have to say they have been excellent. It is so easy to learn with this method, on the internet. I have picked up so much useful information that never was taught to me during my private training or my Instrument training."

- Greg Ellis

"Looking through everything you offer at the PilotWorkshops web site, I am convinced we would have a dramatic decrease in incidents and accidents if mandatory membership was required to retain your pilot certificate."

- Doug Brown

"This is a really great program, just what every pilot has waited for. I hope I can put into practice all of the knowledge presented.
The workshops are like having you own personal tutor. I will be going back to review it many times in the future."

- Francis R Chmiel

"I am just getting back into flying after a long while out of it. The best things I find are the practical advice and the reassurance of listening to professional and knowledgeable instructors focusing on the very important issues. This leads me to be a lot more circumspect about my attitude and approach to flying than I think I would be 'naturally'."

- Andrew Shearer

"I have found your tactics to be a helpful refresher for me. I am an ATP rated pilot who has been out of the game for a number of years and the course is helping me get back in the game."

- Wayne Berg

"I am so glad to have these workshop. Very nicely organized and informative."

- Dr. Gary Myers

"I am a new low time pilot and I believe that this style of learning once only available by hanging out at the airport talking to the 'old guys' has now been extended across our country...I really have enjoyed this website/community so far."

- Donald Smith

"Always enjoy the workshop topics. Every pilot will glean useful info - new or just review - that might just make a difference someday."

- Jeff Noble
